Skim of snow in the spruce this morning about to topple over Blackwater Falls. 30 skiable days so far, only a dozen in ok shape...reminds us of 1985. Forging on with diversified business as everyone has to eat and hike. Keep the faith yet a major change in the weather pattern needed for xc skiing the WV highlands. We stay open into mid April if called for. Cheers, heading over to Canaan's manmade snow to tele ski. chip

Mostly wind with only 4 to 5 inches light powder over rain soaked ground that has never frozen this winter. Marginal skiing at higher elevations likely today yet no one has gone up there yet. Our snowfarm got huge amounts of drifted snow. All events are on, teaching lessons, xc skiing, and sending skiers via our website north toward you. Enjoy the weekend!

Hazardous Weather Outlook and fun jumpin' the gun nothing to lose in a winter like this.... Your Fearless Canaan Weatherman expects a brief return to more seasonable temperatures and modest upslope snows (5-to-10 inches over 3 days) Friday into Sunday with one of the nicer winter recreation weekends of this pathetically mild and low-snow winter on tap. For this coming weekend, I see 2 periods of snow arriving. First, I expect generous rains (up to 1.0 inch but no flooding) from a strong storm passing to the west and racing northeast, will change to snow Friday morning around daybreak (6 to 8 am) as colder sub-freezing air at cloud level rushes in. Steady upslope snow will continue Friday, gradually tapering off after dark. Snowfall from this event should be in the 3-to-6 inch range when over by mid-Saturday morning. Strong northwest winds gusting to 40 MPH will usher in seasonably colder air, causing considerable blowing and drifting snow. Afternoon temperatures Saturday should stay in the 20's F above 3,000 feet. There will be a break before a second, weaker disturbance arrives, producing a second round of light snow beginning late Saturday afternoon, continuing into Sunday morning, then again tapering off by daybreak Sunday. The second round of snow should produce another 2-to-4 inches of fluffy powder. Temperatures will only rebound to the 30's F Sunday afternoon but the dry air will allow snow on the ground to remain until a stronger Monday warmup begins. In summary, I see a 3-day Friday through Sunday snow total ( snow reports for Saturday 7 am through Monday 7 am) of 5-to-10 inches of snow above 3,000 feet. Snow-making and winter recreation conditions should be excellent for the entire weekend. As always, I will advise you if I see changes to this outlook in the wind, no pun intended. Your Fearless Canaan Weatherman 2/6 9 am

Skinny snow where trail work and rock skis are meeting. Never give up a chance to slide in a winter like this. Almost 3" of firm supportive snow in the high country where we made loops clearing branches and marking a new trail. Marginal is the word of the day yet are nearing 20 skiable days. Full set of events, live music, special Indian dinner, and perhaps more snow this weekend? Keep your gear handy just in case. Indian Dinner Fri night, Tom Bachelor live Sat night w/gourmet menu, Yoga in the Yurt, Natural History walks, Snowshoe race...maybe, and kids skiing on real thin cover atop smooth pastures. Not over until its over yet this is the worse snow year we can ever recall...stock prices are plummeting. Pic above is the telemark ski rack where one can ride the lifts at Canaan and rip on manmade snow. Also some runs at Blackwater Falls sled run when they are closed Mon-Wed. Deep manmade there as well. DON"T GIVE UP, head north and west!
