Snow conditions history for North Woods
Thank you to all the snow conditions reporters who provide these updates for us.
20 January 2025
More snow overnight than I'd expected - another 5 inches of fresh, dry powder overnight - it's a winter wonderland in the North Woods with trails canopied by branches loaded down with snow; it's beautiful out. Temperatures are cold but nice for active pursuits - calm with some sunshine currently as well - it doesn't feel as cold as you might expect but, take along some spare layers for when you stop or in case the winds pick up ... Have fun!

We ended up with about 4 inches of perfect powdery snow by the end of the day with flurries continuing this evening. This fresh accumulation and colder temperatures resulted in excellent conditions by late afternoon. Temperatures will continue to drop overnight to a low of 5 degrees by tomorrow morning with a windchill of -12 degrees. Temperatures won't climb much higher than that through the day and are expected to drop even lower by Tuesday morning. Aside from the cold, snow conditions at least will be great and should hold through the week with some additional accumulation expected through Monday and Tuesday and some sunshine and milder temperatures by mid-week ... looks like a nice weekend coming up.

Fortunately, we had enough snow accumulated to absorb the rain yesterday and there doesn't seem to be any noticeable degradation in conditions. Temperatures dropped quickly in the evening and through the night returning to the 20's by this morning and are expected to continue to fall into the teens as the day progresses. It's been snowing for the past couple hours and the tracks have already been lightly freshened with about an inch of drier snow - snowfall continues at this time and we should receive a few more inches through the day providing enjoyable conditions for the remainder of the long MLK Day weekend...

Sorry for the late update .... with around 12 inches of powdery snow accumulating through the week and clear skies last evening, the North Woods area was a winter wonderland last evening. We received another 1-2 inches this morning but, with the warmer temperatures, the snow was on the wet side and a little sticky - however, temperatures will be falling again through the weekend with a few more inches of drier snow forecast to freshen the trails for another great winter weekend.

Snowfalls and cold conditions thru the week have built up the base on the North Woods trails to best we've had in a long time. Conditions for skiing have been excellent the past few days and additional accumulation expected this morning will freshen existing tracks. A couple down trees have been reported but nothing that would cause significant difficulties negotiating around them. Temperatures are forecast to be milder today and tomorrow than in recent past days. You can expect nice conditions in the North Woods this weekend if you're planning to get out.

The North Woods accumulated another 1-2 inches of snow through the day yesterday and last evening following Friday's snowfall. No significant accumulation expected today aside from a few flurries but more significant accumulation expected beginning this evening with 5-8 inches forecast by NWS for North Woods area by tomorrow. Cold temperatures in the teens again today with windchills near the single digits. Great winter conditions expected through the coming week with more possibilities for snow forecast daily ... a nice steak of consistent winter weather expected for the North Woods...

8 to 10 inches of accumulation yesterday and thru the evening on top of the thin base we had on the North Woods trails - gusty winds still present so expect drifting in windblown areas. It'll be on the cold side today with temperatures in the teens but, otherwise, a good weekend to explore the North Woods. Another inch or so of snow is forecast through today and another major front is moving in on Sunday with potential for significant snow accumulation on Monday with cold temperatures forecast through next week - should have good snow conditions in the North Woods for a while if the forecast holds!

About 4 inches of snowfall since New Year's Eve but gusty winds, which are forecast to continue through today, have resulted in drifting in windswept areas...grassier trails in the North Woods will be more or less skiable. Additional snowfall is forecast though the next several days with high temperatures holding near the twenties should bring good ski conditions to the North Woods for a nice start to the New Year... Happy New Year!

The North Woods received a surprise snowfall overnight accumulating to about 3 inches by this morning. However, with the rising temperatures, snow is on the wet side - still snow though versus rain. At this time, we have thick fog with very limited visibility. Conditions for skiing not ideal now but conditions might be a little better as temperatures drop overnight if you have time for a Christmas Morning ski. Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukkah/Best Holiday Wishes!

Colder temperatures the past few days allowed the ground to freeze up and snowfall thru the day today accumulated to about 3 inches of fresh powder (more or less in windswept areas) - conditions should be decent tomorrow on the grassier trails of the North Woods such as the upper North Woods loop above the meadow or Mountain View trail. Tomorrow looks like it may be the only day left if you're looking to get in another day of skiing before Christmas as temperatures are forecast to climb back up above freezing again on Monday with no other accumulation forecast through the week ...

Weather conditions are already trending to milder temps this morning but ski conditions on the grassier trails of the North Woods should remain very good through the day - attached photo provided by a good friend and former Nordic Ski Patroller who skied Mountain View yesterday (photo taken heading up Mountain View just up from Warming Hut). Remember: Open deer season is in so wear some fluorescent orange or at least some bright clothing that contrasts with the forest; especially on your dog friends if they're along with you for the ski.

6-8 inches of accumulation so far this week with some additional light snow forecast for this morning. Ground was generally frozen prior to snowfall but there are still some remaining wet spots and high winds resulted in drifting and thin spots in windswept areas. Ski conditions are decent on the grassier trails of the North Woods and surrounding areas such as Mountain View and the upper North Woods loop northwest of the meadow. A warm-up is forecast in the next few days so today and Saturday look like the optimal days to take advantage of current conditions.
